Back with a bang

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's youth sides were back in action this weekend after their Christmas break – and the Under 16 Yellow, Under 15 Blue and Under 13 Blue sides made sure they returned in style as they all recorded big victories.

All three teams are in the hunt for honours – and they all did their prospects no harm in their first matches of 2022.

The Under 16 Yellows were 10-2 home winners against Tetbury Town Youth. A five-goal haul from Patrick Otoo-Mensah, braces from Ewan Painter and Lewis Taylor and a further strike from Nathan Woodward ensured Bassett brushed aside their opponents.

There was also an eight-goal margin of victory for the Under 15 Blues. They kept up their charge in North Wilts League Division Two with a 9-1 thrashing of Croft Junior Blue as seven different scorers got in on the act. Edward Greenouff and Beau Hicks both netted twice, while Jamie Black, Finley Hyde, Caden Jefferies, Finlay Marshall and Samuel Smith also scored.

The Division One-leading Under 13 Blues then saw off fifth place Purton Youth Spartans 5-1 courtesy of Phanuel Asenso's hat trick and strikes from Karol Czekanski and Liam Lye-Owens.

While not quite as emphatic as those trio of teams, the Under 12 Blue and Under 16 Blue sides also recorded important wins.

The Under 12 Blues pulled themselves within three points of third place Wims 11 Foothills with an impressive 3-1 triumph against their Division Three rivals as Alex Greenouff, Ewan McGeachie and Harry Scott registered.

Meanwhile, in Division One the Under 16 Blues edged out Wroughton Youth Panthers by the odd goal for the second time this season, winning a tight, hard-fought contest 1-0.

It was a good weekend for the Under 14 Yellows too as goals from Kaydon Barrett and Oliver Berry earned a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Chiseldon Youth White.

Elsewhere, five sides tasted defeat.

The Under 18 Blues were well beaten by visitors Wroughton Youth in their North Wilts League Cup quarter final. Sebastian Smith scored Bassett's consolation goal in a 7-1 defeat.

On Saturday, a Daisy Bundy goal was not enough for the Under 12 Girls who fought bravely before ultimately losing 3-1 to FC Chippenham Youth.

Back in the North Wilts League, Edward Aitken scored as the Under 18 Yellows lost 6-1 away at Kingsdown Lions Black.

Jack McGeoch and Daniel Seal were both on target but the Under 13 Yellows lost ground in the battle for a top two finish in Division Four with a 7-2 reverse against Stratton Youth Blue, who climb above Bassett into second.

And Lydiard Millicent Juniors proved too good for the Under 14 Blues, who fell to an 8-0 defeat.

At the non-competitive age groups, Bassett's Under 11 Blues and Under 9 sides were in North Wilts League Trophy action. The Under 11 Blues took on Highworth Town Juniors H in a quarter final tie while the Under 9s faced a second round contest against Wims 11 Foothills.

Trophy Event games are designed to be short-term experiences helping children learn about winning and losing in an appropriate environment, and are held for teams across the Under 9 to 11 age groups.
