Veterans into County Cup final

Tuesday 11th January 2022

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are into the final of the Wiltshire County Veterans Cup after a dramatic semi final win on penalties over Melksham Town.

Facing a Melksham side who have won all eleven of the Mid Wiltshire Veterans Division games they have played so far this season - in which they have conceded just three times, Bassett knew they had to be at their best to have any hopes of progressing to the final.

From front to back though, Bassett delivered an exceptional performance.

In attack, Bassett tested the Melksham defence like no other opponent they have faced this season. And the pressure they were able to exert yielded goals from Steve Howse, Jeremy Newton and Chris Head.

At the other end, despite conceding three times, the Bassett backline stood strong against Melksham's potent attack, ultimately doing enough to ensure the game ended all square and that penalties would be required to determine who would advance.

'Keeper Nick Warren was then Bassett's hero in the shootout, saving two Melksham spot kicks to seal a 4-2 triumph and a final showdown against Bradford Town.
