Mixed fortunes as season conclusion nears

Tuesday 11th May 2021

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's youth teams.

Victories for the Under 16 Blues, Under 15 Blues and Under 12 Blues kept alive their hopes of high placings coming the end of the North Wilts League season.

However, the Under 18s saw their top dreams of a runners-up finish in Division One evaporate, while the Under 13 Blues and Yellows were both frustrated in their bids to crack the top three in their respective divisions.

Under 16 Blue

Matthew Brandon and Jacob Rendell-Haines fired the Under 16 Blues to a 2-0 triumph against FC Abbey Meads Youth Blue, a result that leaves Bassett within a point of current joint-third place sides Lydiard Youth Black and Highworth Town Juniors H with two games to play in Division Two.

Under 15 Blue

The Under 15 Blues also enjoyed a successful weekend, taking four points from their doubleheader with FC Chippenham Youth Barbarians.

The 'away' leg was won 5-0 as braces from Samuel Bounds and Finley Smith and a further strike from Reuben Badman delivered the points.

Smith then scored twice as the 'home' fixture was drawn 2-2.

After 14 games, Bassett are fourth, albeit just two points behind leaders Wroughton Youth Panthers who have played a game more.

Of the other two teams ahead of them, Bassett hold two games in hand over Durrington Lions but have played twice more than AFC Newbury Boys.

Therefore, all is still to play for in Division Two.

Under 12 Blue

Meanwhile, the Under 12 Blues' Division Two title push remains full steam ahead as they won both legs of a doubleheader against FC Chippenham Youth Tigers on Sunday.

Sonny Parmaku's hat trick was the key to their 5-1 'away' triumph, with William Smith and Elliott Tew also netting.

Four different scorers – Smith, Indy Iles-Jones, Liam Lye-Owens and Austin Tanner – then fired them to a 4-0 win in the 'home' fixture.

With four games remaining, Bassett lead Ramsbury Youth by three points.

Under 13 Blue

After an impressive midweek win against Malmesbury Youth, the Under 13 Blues' hopes of taking a top three finish in Division Two were dealt a blow as they were held 0-0 by current second place occupiers Highworth Town Juniors C.

Bassett currently sit in fifth, six points off third place Fairford Town Youth with a game in hand. The two sides meet on Sunday for a crucial doubleheader.

Under 13 Yellow

The Under 13 Yellows' also ended up sharing the points after they split four goals with Wroughton Youth Blue. Daniel King scored twice for Bassett, who are currently fifth in Division Four and remain eight points behind third place occupiers Wroughton with two games in hand.

Under 18s

There was heartbreak for the Under 18s whose outside shot at runners-up spot in Division One was ended following a 5-4 home loss against Fairford Town Development. With their win, Fairford also move above Bassett into fourth.

On target for Bassett in a thrilling encounter were Rhys Farrow, James Johnson, Thomas Pitt and Alex Stephenson.
