Chairman’s Message following FA Cup tie

Sunday 4th October 2020

I would like to thank everyone who attended yesterday's Emirates FA Cup game against Oxford City. The support was fantastic for Sam's squad, even though the rain persisted through the day (I'm still drying out).

While suffering a 2-1 defeat, we can be proud of how the team perform as we know we were so close to taking a very big scalp. The quality of football from our first team is the best I have seen for some time – all credit for this goes to Sam Collier, Matt Bulman and Tom Jones, supported by the Development and Under 18 squads. But as important was the commitment of the players on the day, who left nothing in the changing room. I congratulate you all for equalling the club's best ever run in the FA Cup and for a superb performance against Oxford yesterday.

We are blessed with a great facility. Even with all the rain that fell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the pitch was in great shape and not showing any signs of holding water, even though games around us were off due to waterlogged pitches. Our groundsman Andy Clinch should be delighted – and he deservedly received recognition from our visitors for the pitch's pristine condition.

This event would not happen without significant support from our volunteers. Saturday was no exception. Pre- and post-match administration, including the sale of tickets, preparing the kit, car park duties, turnstile cover, food preparation for our kiosk along with a take-away service for post-match food for the players, then this morning the big clean ensuring the football wing is cleansed. There is a huge amount of effort that goes into the day that is not always visible. Huge thanks and a big well done therefore go to all our volunteers in making the day a successful one for our great club.

The club would like to see you all back supporting mid-week and weekend fixtures for our senior men's and women's teams. Please therefore keep an eye on our website for upcoming fixtures. Our teams need your support as we move, for our first team, into the FA Vase and, for all our sides, their league fixtures.

Yours in sport,

Andy Walduck
Royal Wootton Bassett Town FC Chairman
