Blues into Veterans' County Cup final

Sunday 08 March 2020 - by Stuart Smedley (Updated on 08 March 2020 at 20:29)

Congratulations to Royal Wootton Bassett Town Veterans Blue who booked their place in the Wiltshire County Veterans' Cup final with a come from behind victory against Stratton Juniors.

Trailing 1-0 with quarter of an hour remaining, goals from Gavin Cook, Steve Shaw and Martin Cooper turned the tie around to seal a final spot for Bassett.

It was the second dramatic, comeback victory Bassett have recorded in the competition. After receiving a bye in the first round, Bassett required extra time to see off Trowbridge Tigers 7-3 in the quarter finals. In that game, the Blues had found themselves 3-1 down with minutes remaining.

Like the Blues, Stratton had squeaked through in the last eight too, defeating Bassett's Yellow side 4-3 on penalties after the tie finished 1-1 after extra time. A tight semi final contest was therefore always likely to be on the cards - and that proved to be the case.

Bassett will face either Melksham Town or Swindon Rovers in the final.
