Ladies handed Portishead trip in Women’s FA Cup

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies will visit Portishead Town in the Women's FA Cup second qualifying round on Sunday 6th October (2pm kick off).

After defeating fellow South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division side Torquay United 8-0 on Sunday, Bassett will once again face league rivals as they seek to move one step closer towards their dream of a place in the first round proper.

And while a tough test lies in store, Jonny House and James Goddard's side will be quietly confident that they can secure victory having stayed clear of a pairing with higher level opponents.

The tie will be the first meeting between the teams since they faced one another in the South West Women's League Eastern Division during the 2017-18 season.

Portishead edged the head-to-head battle that year, winning 3-1 in Wiltshire after a 1-1 draw in Somerset. And they would go on to ultimately earn the title ahead of Bassett by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Both teams will be looking to advance further than ever before when they meet in the Women's FA Cup.

Portishead entered the competition for the first time in 2018-19 and were eliminated in the second qualifying round by AFC Bournemouth after recording victories against Bideford and Downend Flyers. That cup performance was matched by a successful league campaign as they finished sixth – a creditable performance as they made their Premier Division debut.

Portishead reached the second qualifying round this year courtesy of a 3-1 win away at league rivals Middlezoy Rovers, having seen off Swindon Spitfires 7-1 in the preliminary round.

Bassett, meanwhile, have advanced to the second qualifying round for the first time ever with their wins against Chipping Sodbury Town and Torquay; they have previously appeared at this stage in 2016-17, but that was where they entered the competition.
