Five-star Ladies off to a perfect start

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies began life in the South West Regional Women's Football League in perfect fashion, defeating Marine Academy Plymouth 5-0.

Big winners in the Women's FA Cup last week, goals from Lauren Kayll, Hannah Gulliver, Laura Jefferies and Aly Lyons, as well as an own goal, meant they repeated that trick in their opening league fixture.

The visitors went ahead just before the half hour mark, Kayll slotting home after latching onto Hayley Huckin's through ball to complete a well-worked move that had started deep inside their own half.

Eight minutes later, their lead was doubled as great work down the right wing opened up space for a cross which was diverted into the net off a Marine Academy defender.

Despite trailing Marine Academy were still in the game. And they were nearly rewarded five minutes after the restart when an Amber Hadrill shot forced a good save from Bassett 'keeper Alice Farnell.

Eventually though Bassett all but sealed the points when Gulliver fired home at the far post from Grace Eagles' cross.

That goal was then followed by Jefferies scoring, not for the first time, directly from a corner.

A fifth soon followed. Sophie Smith's surging run didn't receive the reward it deserved as her shot was saved, but Lyons was on hand to put away the rebound and add further gloss to a superb start to the season.
