Ladies to host Torquay in Women’s FA Cup

Monday 2nd September 2019

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies have been handed a home tie against Torquay United in the Women's FA Cup first qualifying round.

The tie, which will take place at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on Sunday 22nd September (2pm kick off), is Bassett's reward for their convincing 7-0 preliminary round victory against Chipping Sodbury Town on Sunday.

Torquay, who this season will be opponents of Bassett in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division, advanced courtesy of a 3-0 home triumph against RNAS Culdrose.

After recording only their second ever win in the competition on Sunday, Bassett will now be hoping to win through to the second qualifying round for the first time in the club's history. They did feature at that stage in 2016-17, however it was the round at which the team entered.

To do so, they'll need to defeat a Gulls side who have an impressive recent record in the Women's FA Cup, having reached the third qualifying round in three of the past five years.

Their most recent journey to that stage came in 2017-18 when they defeated Eastleigh and AFC Bournemouth – Bassett's conquerors that year – before succumbing on penalties to Brislington.

By some quirk of misfortune, that was the third year in a row in which Torquay were eliminated by Brislington, having lost to them at the same stage in 2016-17 and the first qualifying round in 2015-16.

Prior to that, in 2014-15, a win over Ilminster Town and walkover against Kidlington set up a third qualifying round tie with Swindon Town, which they lost 4-2.

Last season they fell to defeat against Weston super Mare in the first qualifying round.
