Veterans Super Sunday another outstanding success

Monday 6th May 2019

The second edition of Royal Wootton Bassett Town's 'Veterans Super Sunday' was another outstanding success, with more than £1,000 raised on the day being donated to the RAF Association.

The culmination of the RAF FA Veterans' fundraising efforts for this season, the day featured three entertaining games.

The main event saw Bassett's Veterans Blue team and the RAF FA share six goals in an evenly matched and hotly contested encounter.

Bassett scored three excellent goals in the match, courtesy of Jeremy Newton's deft first-time lob and long-range strikes from Martin Ohrland and Martin Cooper.

But they were pegged back by the RAF, whose goalscorers included their departing President Sir Christopher Coville as he found the net after seeing his initial penalty kick parried away.

Prior to that match, Stratton Juniors put five goals without reply past Bassett's Yellow side. Then, in the final fixture, the Wales Veterans FA XI triumphed 7-0 against Bassett's Over 50s. On target for the Welsh side were Mike Fredrickson (2), Vince Lewis (2), Mark Dyke, Laurence Owen and Darren Thompson.

The event was, like the inaugural Super Sunday last year, very well attended.

And it was an honour to welcome Cllr Michael Farrow, the Mayor of Royal Wootton Bassett, and Oliver Selfe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Wiltshire FA, as guests, along with our friends from the RAF FA, Wales Veterans FA and Stratton Juniors.

On Saturday evening, the club also entertained RAF FA Veterans for a fun-filled disco and karaoke evening in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse. Thanks go to DJ Rapid for providing the entertainment.
