Arrell prowess shoots down Spitfires

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies returned to action with a convincing 4-0 victory away against Swindon Spitfires.

Having suffered their only league loss of the season against Spitfires when the teams met back in October, Bassett were both anxious to avenge that defeat and also wary of the potential threat Spitfires posed.

But a strong display that silenced the Spitfires' attack and put their hosts' defence under constant pressure ensured that Bassett's win would be a rather routine one.

Emily Arrell in particular proved too hot for the Spitfires defence to handle.

She struck twice in quick succession early on. Her first came following great pressing from Lauren Usher and Lauren Kayll, the ball breaking for Arrell who rounded the 'keeper and tapped in. Shortly after the restart, she found herself in possession on the edge of the area, took a touch to beat her marker and placed a precise shot into the back of the net.

Bassett were well in control, but were unable to increase their advantage before the break, having a goal disallowed for offside following a flowing move down the right side before Arrell struck the post.

Pressure early in the second half almost brought goals for Arrell and Kayll, the former placing a lob narrowly over and the latter forcing a good save from the Spitfires 'keeper.

The third eventually arrived as Spitfires were unable to clear from a Holly Baker cross and Arrell nipped in with a poacher's finish to complete her hat trick.

She continued to cause all kinds of problems for the Spitfires backline. A cross of hers forced another fine save before she teed up Huckin who could only find the post.

Huckin would join her strike partner on the scoresheet though. Racing onto a through ball, the pacy forward went on a surging run from the halfway line, surging past the last defender before slotting past the 'keeper.

Frampton Rangers' victory against third place Cheltenham Town Development means Bassett remain two points clear at the top of the table. While that keeps up the pressure from their closest challengers, the result does mean Bassett are a step closer to securing at least a top two finish with Cheltenham now nine points back (albeit with a game in hand still to play).
