Five star Ladies secure Christmas number one

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies recorded a convincing 5-0 victory away against Wiltshire rivals Laverstock and Ford to make certain that they will be in top spot at Christmas in the South West Women's Football League Eastern Division.

Despite having to play up the slope in the first half, Bassett were in control of proceedings, going close early on through Emily Arrell, Holly Baker and Lisa Coe.

And it would be Arrell who eventually gave the visitors the lead, finding the net after a good exchange between Baker and Laura Jefferies had set free Coe, who then unselfishly squared to her teammate.

Coe would subsequently score her team's second, coolly lobbing the Laverstock 'keeper from the edge of the area following Baker's recovery of possession deep inside opposition territory.

Bassett's excellent football brought about goal number three. Lauren Kayll and Arrell combined with one another before the latter played a low cross, which Baker fired home after a clever Coe dummy on the edge of the area.

Following the restart, Emma Sykes grabbed the fourth as she steered a free kick into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Coe ultimately completed the scoring, beating the offside trap before producing a side-footed finish from a Lily Withers free kick.

The referee did call a halt to proceedings a few minutes before the ninety were up, the Laverstock pitch having suffered under a deluge of rain to the extent that further play was deemed impossible.

But the outcome was well and truly beyond doubt as Bassett made it eight wins a row, a run that seen them score 28 goals and concede just five.
