For the second time in a week, Royal Wootton Bassett Town came up short by the odd goal in a thrilling contest, this time losing 3-2 away against Binfield.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town remain without an away league win after 2018 after they were defeated 3-2 by Binfield in an entertaining contest played in miserable conditions.

For the second time in a week, Sam Collier's side found themselves on the short end of a defeat by the odd goal. However, unlike in Monday's 4-3 reverse at the hands of Reading City, against Binfield they never found themselves in a position where they were ahead.

Binfield first went ahead eight minutes before the interval as Jemel Johnson used his pace to get in behind the Bassett defence and coolly slotted past an onrushing Charlie McCready from the edge of the box.

Bassett were able to restore parity on the stroke of half time though as Matt Bennett, scoring his fourth goal in the past three games, provided the equaliser.

Both teams showed attacking intent after the restart, aided by a pitch slickened by the torrential rain that made life hard for defenders.

Neither team was able to find the breakthrough though until Gary Smith pounced to the put the hosts in front in the 68th minute. Then, ten minutes later James Knight doubled Binfield's advantage.

That goal should have put the result beyond doubt. But, demonstrating the spirit that has taken them to a position near the top of the table, Bassett grabbed a lifeline when TJ Bohane found the net for the twelfth time this season.

However, an equaliser wasn't forthcoming, prolonging Bassett's dismal away form.

The last occasion on which they picked up three points on their travels came on 16th December 2017 away at Ascot United. With five away league trips to come before the start of 2019, time is running out for Bassett to put that right.
