Ladies dominant in Trowbridge triumph

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies made it three wins from their opening four South West Women's League Eastern Division fixtures with an 8-1 triumph against newly promoted Trowbridge Town.

Save for a short period in the second half after Trowbridge were able to grab a goal back, Bassett were in full control of the match and performed brilliantly, particularly in the first half when surged into a 5-0 lead.

They got off the mark in slightly unfortunate circumstances for the visitors as Lisa Coe's terrific delivery from a corner was headed into the net by a Trowbridge defender.

Their next four goals would arrive in style though.

Aly Lyons grabbed the second, tapping into an empty net from a Coe delivery to finish off a fine passing move down the wing.

More intricate passing play brought the third. This time Bassett worked their way through the middle of the pitch, with Amber Egerton slipping a through ball to Hayley Huckin, who coolly found the bottom corner after beating the offside trap.

Hollie Timbrell then got in on the act with her first senior goal for Bassett. A Coe cross was only half-cleared and the ball dropped for Timbrell, who made no mistake.

Then, on the stroke of half time, a winding run from Huckin that started on the halfway line ended with the forward tucking her shot beneath the Trowbridge 'keeper.

Bassett continued to attack at will following the restart, and Coe was unfortunate not to add her name to the scoresheet as she saw a long range strike bounce back off the crossbar.

The sixth eventually came courtesy of another own goal as a Laura Jefferies corner caused chaos in the box and was diverted in.

But Bassett let down their guard somewhat after that goal, immediately conceding following a defensive error. And that ushered in a brief spell of panicky play that saw the team's performance tail off somewhat.

However, after Huckin hit the post, debutant Emily Arrell eventually settled any nerves, scoring her team's seventh from the penalty spot.

And Arrell would round off the scoring to complete her brace, slotting in after latching onto Zoe Shellard's defence splitting through ball.
