Late goal denies Bassett in cup cracker

Despite a good performance, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were eliminated from the Wiltshire Senior Cup as they were defeated 3-2 by Westbury United in an entertaining first round encounter.

While the result meant Royal Wootton Bassett Town were eliminated in the first round of this season's edition of the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Sam Collier and his team can be pleased with their performance in a narrow, entertaining 3-2 loss against Western League Premier Division high-flyers Westbury United.

It took a late goal from the visitors to determine the outcome of the tie, in which both sides played some quality football. Certainly for the neutral it was a great game to watch. But, with any cup contest, there had to be a winner.

Bassett looked well positioned at half time as they led 2-1 thanks to first half goals from Mark James and Nick Stanley.

Their first arrived early on as great work in the build up from Josh Shama set up the opportunity for James to grab his second of the season.

Westbury's response was prompt though as Ben Griffiths teed up the prolific Callum Demkiv, who made no mistake to pull his side level.

But, with the interval looming, Bassett were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position and Stanley curled a sublime effort in the top corner.

While ahead, the game was finely balanced. And the teams were level on the hour when Jamie Jordan's looping effort found its way past 'keeper Charlie McCready.

Both sides pushed for the winner. Yet, to Bassett's disappointment it would be Westbury who produced it as Joe Stradling's delivery crept into the back of the net, his teammate Francois Allen having done enough to nip in front of McCready and distract the 'keeper.
