Under 12 Blues smash a six in competitive debut

Sunday 9th September 2018

It was a largely successful opening weekend of the season for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's youth teams, with six of the ten sides in action winning and another recording a draw.

Among the victorious half dozen were the Under 12 Blues, who won 6-2 in their debut competitive fixture against Lydiard Millicent Juniors. Five different players – Jamie Black, Cameron Iles, Edward Greenouff, Caden Jefferies and Joshua Sturmey – found the net, while an own goal completed the scoring.

Also hitting the opposition for six were the Under 13 Blues who defeated Lydiard Youth Irons 6-3. Scoring for Bassett were Jack Blunt (2), Evan Bexon-Shaw, Noah Cranswick-Coates, James Dorset and Alec Gawthropp.

The Under 14 Blues started life in Division One in style, recording a 5-3 victory away against Cirencester Town. However, they first had to overcome a 3-1 deficit. Showing great character, they changed the course of the game in their favour, and Jacob Rendell-Haines' four-timer and Luke Boles' debut goal secured the points.

Also coming from behind were the Under 13 Yellows, who earned an opening day point. Away at FC Chippenham Youth Barbarians, they found themselves two goals down before Alana Hunt and Lewis Taylor brought them level. Chippenham went ahead again before Sam Watson struck a long-range free kick to make it 3-3.

There were solid victories for the Under 16 Blues, who scored through Daniel Warre (3), Ben Chin and Luca Robinson in a 5-2 triumph against Castle Combe Colts, and the Under 18 Yellows, who beat Wanborough Juniors 3-1 thanks to goals from Jack Coward, Joe Mitchell and Luke Saunders.

Also triumphing were the Under 14 Yellows, who won a thrilling fixture against Ramsbury Youth by the odd goal in five. On target for the hosts were Oliver Dyer, Benjamin King and Ellie O'Nions.

Both teams in North Wilts League cup action fell to defeat. Beau Hicks scored four times for the Under 12 Yellows, but they lost 11-4 against Ferndale Rodbourne YCFC. Meanwhile, the Under 13 Whites were seen off 4-1 by Fairford and Lechlade Saxons, with Nathan Woodward grabbing Bassett's consolation.

In the league, the Under 15 Yellows opened their Division Three campaign with a 4-0 loss against Fairford and Lechlade Revenants.
