Slump continues at bottom side Burnham

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's winless league run extended to nine games as they were defeated 2-0 by basement dwellers Burnham.

Having not won in the league since the middle of December, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were hopeful that a trip to bottom side Burnham would provide the chance to finally bring an end to what has been a sorry, depressing slump.

However, Sam Collier's side once again came away empty-handed as their Buckinghamshire hosts, rejuvenated following the appointment of new manager Paul Shone and the recruitment of a phalanx of players with Southern League experience in the week, triumphed 2-0.

A pair of second half goals determined the game's outcome, with Bassett once again left to curse their luck as they twice found the woodwork.

The opening period was a scrappy affair, the conditions not being of help to either team as the rock hard, frosty pitch limited their ability to get the ball down and play.

However, with chances limited, it was to be the visitors who came closest to breaking the deadlock, a powerful Kai Robinson shot shaving the outside of the post as the interval neared.

Burnham had been lively though. And, within minutes of the restart, they got their noses in front.

Matty Sinclair was given too much time on the edge of the area, and he produced a precise strike to beat Ian Gill.

Bassett responded well and were actually on top for a prolonged spell. They came within inches of equalising too as Richie Saunders saw a header come back off the inside of the post.

Burnham ultimately punished Bassett for failing to take advantage of that period of pressure though, Calvin Morgan scoring to seal the points and extend Bassett's winless run to nine games.
