Defensive strength inspires victories

Sunday 28th January 2018

Outstanding defensive performances provided the keys to victory for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Under 12 Yellow and Under 15 Yellows as they both pitched shutouts in 2-0 wins.

The Under 12 Yellows' earlier season contest with Stratton Juniors Bears had also been a low scoring affair, finishing 1-1. But, in another meeting that produced only a pair of goals, Bassett ensured they took all three points by securing a third clean sheet in their past four fixtures. Deniz McGeachie and Pierre Storey netted for Bassett.

With victory they also pulled within six points of Division Four frontrunners Ramsbury Youth and can close that gap to just three if they prevail in the game in hand they hold.

The Under 15 Yellows, meanwhile, recorded a win by the same scoreline against Marlborough Youth courtesy of goals from Noah Beech and Adam Jones. And that stretched their lead at the top of Division Three to five points with second place Swindon Supermarine J inactive.

Another table-topping team to triumph this weekend were the Under 13 Blues. They suffered their first league defeat of the campaign in their last outing, but returned to winning ways by beating mid-table Wroughton Youth Blue 4-2.

Goals from Michael Clifton, Jacob Rendell-Haines, Joey Warren and Harvey Watkinson secured the points on their travels.

Both the Under 16 Blues and Under 13 Yellows faced league leaders this weekend and came up empty-handed. The elder of the two sides, scoring through Joseph Price, kept things relatively close against Shrivenham and Watchfield Royals White, but the title contending visitors eventually pulled away for a 4-1 win. It was a different experience for the Under 13 Yellows, however, who lost 15-2 against Liden Community.

On Saturday, the Under 12 Girls fell 2-0 away against AFC Corsham, while, on Sunday, the Under 12 Whites lost 6-1 against Ferndale Rodbourne Rebels. Also beaten were the Under 14 Yellows, who were defeated 5-0 by FC Calne Blue.
