Under 12 Whites prey on Leopards to advance in cup

The youth section season got underway this weekend. And, on the whole, it was a successful start for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's teams.

Alongside the Under 12 Yellows, the Under 12 Whites were in cup action to begin their campaign. The Whites advanced in their North Wilts League Cup preliminary round tie, defeating Wroughton Youth Leopards 2-1 in a tight encounter.

The Yellows were eliminated. However they gave Robins Red – a side two divisions above them – a good run for their money before ultimately falling to a 3-1 defeat. Samuel Watson found the back of the net for Bassett.

On Saturday the Under 12 Girls got off to a fine start in the Wiltshire County Girls League. Poppy Wannell's hat trick and a fine defensive effort helped them to a 3-0 triumph against AFC Corsham.

In the North Wilts League on Sunday there were winning starts for four of the seven teams in league action.

After finishing runners-up in Division One last season, the Under 15 Blues will be looking to go one better this year. And they set down a marker in a 6-2 victory against Croft Junior Blue. Daniel Warre led the way with a brace, while Nat Bell, Landon Golding, Jed Phillips and Jack Langcaster all contributed a goal each.

In Division Three, the Under 15 Yellows kicked off with a well-earned 2-0 triumph against Pewsey Vale courtesy of goals from Callum Flay and Tom Warren.

The Under 14 Blues, who narrowly missed out on a top two finish in Division One in 2016-17, saw off Swindon Supermarine N by the odd goal in five in their opener. Bassett trailed 1-0 at the break, but Otis Lewis scored twice following the restart, while Jack Osbaldeston was also on target to secure the points.

Also victorious were the Under 13 Blues, whose five-star attacking display helped them claim a 5-2 win away against Ferndale Rodbourne YCFC. The teams were tied 1-1 at the break, but a storming second half helped Bassett claim the win by a comfortable margin. Jacob Rendell-Haines found the back of the net twice, while Edward Aitken, Joshua Griffin and Samuel Warner also contributed.

The Yellows, meanwhile, netted one goal fewer, but that didn't prove enough to win their home contest with Lambourn Sports Juniors, as the visitors narrowly edged a nine-goal thriller. On target for Bassett were Benjamin King (2), James Humphrey and Ellie O'Nions.

Alec Gawthropp netted for the Under 12 Blues as they opened with a 4-1 league defeat away against Bradford Town Youth Mustangs.

The Under 16 Blues were beaten 6-0 by Liden Community.
