Guppy celebrates Fantasy League glory yet again

Tuesday 23rd May 2017

For the third consecutive season, Andy Guppy triumphed in the Royal Wootton Bassett Fantasy Football League as he finished a comfortable 43 points ahead of runner-up Michael Case.

The result means the league's top two was the same as it was a year ago when just sixteen points separated the two players in the final reckoning.

Reserve team member Guppy and youth section parent Case – himself an ex-winner - used a phenomenal final three weeks of the season to claim the top two spots.

With three rounds left to play, Guppy trailed then-leader Tim Hall (former first and reverse team player and current Wiltshire FA Development Officer) by 41 points. Case, meanwhile, was languishing in fifth.

However, by the end of that round Case had jumped to third while Guppy had narrowed the gap to Hall to just ten points.

The penultimate round of the season then proved decisive.

Both Guppy and Case seized upon the goalscoring exploits of Harry Kane, Alexis Sanchez and Gabriel de Jesus to each score over a century of points and leapfrog Hall, before finishing off with solid performances in the final round..

Rounding out the top five behind Hall, who led the table for long periods of the season, were former first team player and two-time winner Sam Lawro and ex-youth section member Phillip Forster.

The top five and their points tallies were:

1. Andy Guppy – 2,330
2. Michael Case – 2,287
3. Tim Hall – 2,225
4. Sam Lawro – 2,209
5. Phillip Forster – 2,194

A huge thank you to all 79 players who entered the league this season.

Free to enter, it's always great fun to play – and we look to seeing more of you take part in next season's edition!
