Ladies and Under 14 Blues aim for cup glory

Tuesday 9th May 2017

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Ladies and Under 14 Blue sides go for cup glory this weekend as they look to end their seasons by lifting silverware.

It starts on Saturday morning with the Under 14 Blues taking on Croft Junior Yellow in the North Wilts League Cup final at the County Ground (10am kick off).

Then, on Sunday afternoon, the Ladies face Almondsbury UWE in the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup showpiece at the Gloucestershire FA's Almondsbury headquarters (2pm kick off).

Under 14 Blues - North Wilts League Cup Final

After finishing second – and just a single point - behind Swindon Supermarine R in the league, the Under 14 Blues will be hoping to go one better in the cup.

Their route to the final began with a first round tie against Bassett's Yellow team, which was won 11-1 as Daniel Warre scored four.

A 12-0 triumph against Wanborough Juniors Yellow – courtesy of four goals from Nathaniel Bell and a Warre hat-trick - then set up a quarter final clash with Castle Combe Colts, which was comfortably negotiated as Bassett triumphed 5-0. Warre led the way with a brace, while Bell, Michael Gilder and Billy Saunders were also on target.

Their semi-final pitted them against league title rivals Supermarine. And in a nail-biting final four encounter, Bassett prevailed 3-2 after extra time. Warre and Sidney Skippen scored for Bassett in normal time before Benjamin Patey – scoring his first of the season – grabbed the winner.

Bassett, cup winners two years ago, will enter the game against Croft as favourites.

However, their Division Two champion opponents should not be underestimated. They went unbeaten in the league, dropping just two points on their way to the title.

Meanwhile, their cup journey has seen them defeat the teams finishing third and fourth in Division One.

In the opening rounds Croft comfortably defeated Highworth Town Juniors J (5-0) and Wanborough Juniors Black (4-1).

They required penalties to defeat Chippenham Town Youth in the last eight after the sides were level 1-1 at the end of extra time before beating FC Calne 3-2 after extra time to book their place in the final.

Ladies - Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup Final

Victory in the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup final on Sunday will be the icing on the cake of the Ladies' most successful campaign to date after they finished runners-up in Division One of the Gloucestershire County Women's League.

Their cup run has seen them rack up the goals. It started with a 20-0 thrashing of Cotswold Rangers in a game which saw ten different scorers register.

Longwell Green Ladies were then defeated 9-0 with Laura Gammon firing in four goals.

After being awarded their quarter final against AEK Boco, Bassett triumphed 4-1 against Forest of Dean courtesy of goals from Gammon, Hayley Huckin, Lisa Curtis and Hannah Gulliver to book their final place.

They will take on an Almondsbury side who they recorded four points against in their league clashes. Their encounter at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground saw Bassett overturn a 2-0 half time to deficit to win 3-2 before they drew 1-1 in the return fixture.

Almondsbury's run to the final has seen them scrape through in each round.

It began with a victory on penalties against Abbeymeads Rovers after they were level at 2-2 after extra time.

They ground out a 1-0 victory against eventual Division Two runners-up Chipping Sodbury Town in the quarter final before then knocking off Division One champions St Nicholas Reserves 2-1 in the last four.
