Amazons comeback dashes Girls' cup double hopes

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 16 Girls came up agonisingly short in a close-fought, high quality Wiltshire County Cup Final against Westbury Youth Amazons as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

The teams were playing slick, passing football throughout, though both defences were also proving to be strong.

It took until the stroke of half time for Bassett to get the breakthrough. Lauren Usher went on a lung-busting run down the right before delivering a superb, pin-point cross which leading scorer Sophie Roberts headed in off the post.

Having defeated Westbury 5-0 in a league encounter at the start of the month, Bassett were hoping that goal would spur them to another victory against the Wiltshire County Girls League leaders.

However, Westbury fought back, equalising with a low drive shortly after the restart.

They then snatched a winner with ten minutes remaining, as great work from the Amazons midfield set up a smart finish.

Despite defeat, it was a great effort by the Bassett girls. And they still have a chance to claim some silverware this season, with a League Cup final against Frome Town Ladies still to come.

In North Wilts League action, the Under 14 Blues prepared for Wednesday's crunch clash against Swindon Supermarine R with a 5-2 victory against Highworth Town Juniors T. Wins in their final two games will mean Bassett take the Division One Title.

The Under 18s saw their hopes of a runners-up finish in Division Two end as they lost 7-1 against Croft Junior Under 18 in their final match of the season. James Handley was on target for Bassett, who are guaranteed third place.
