Four-some Bell rings up the goals

Sunday 26th March 2017

Nathaniel Bell scored four goals as his Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Blue side prepared for next weekend's North Wilts League Cup semi final with an impressive 5-2 league victory away against Lydiard Millicent Juniors.

Taking his tally to 26 for the season, Bell was in unstoppable form, while Sidney Skippen's goal completed a comfortable win for Bassett.

Their victory means they stay within six points of Division One leaders Swindon Supermarine R with three games in hand still to play.

And the top two in Division One are set to square off in what promises to be a thrilling cup semi final next Sunday (10am kick off at Beversbrook), with that meeting the prelude to a potential title decider later in April.

Also at the Under 14 age group, the Yellows triumphed 5-3 away at FC Abbey Meads in their penultimate league fixture. Against the bottom placed side, braces from Noah Beech and Tom Warren and a further strike from Eddie Knight guaranteed Bassett an eighth place finish in Division Three.

Given the number of games settled by just a single goal that they have been involved in this season, that position is arguably an unfair reflection on the Yellow team's quality. Had the rub of the green gone their way more often, then their league position would be at least a couple of places higher.

They'll look to finish their campaign with consecutive victories when they face Lydiard Youth Black next week.

Elsewhere, the Under 18s prevailed by the odd goal in seven in a thriller away against Hungerford Town Juniors. In a game that saw the teams share six goals in the opening period before Bassett found a second half winner, Callum Bridges (2), Ryan Gillie and James Handley were on target for the victorious visitors.

With one game left to play in Division Two, Bassett are still in with a shout of a top two finish. They do require other results to go their way though, as well as a win against title favourites Croft Juniors U18.

There was disappointment for the Under 12 Blues, whose Division Three title hopes were dealt a decisive blow in a 5-2 defeat against Blunsdon.

Sitting second with two games to play, Bassett are now four points behind leaders Wroughton Youth Blue with only a single game in hand.
