Parents and Coaches Tournament provides great entertainment

Monday 11th July 2016

The Parents and Coaches Tournament held at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on Sunday proved a huge success, with 40 players taking part in a closely fought competition.

The ages of those playing ranged from teenagers (those coaching the under 7s and helping out with the club's community coaching scheme) to several who are the wrong side of 50.

Played in good spirits, five teams comprising of eight players each competed in a round robin group stage, with the top two teams playing off in a final. Eventually, the side led by Jeremy Smith came out on top.

The quality of the players on show may not have matched those fighting it out for the Euro 2016 title later in the evening, however the games certainly offered a greater level of excitement than Portugal's clash with France.

Each player paid £5 to take part too, meaning that the tournament helped raise a good amount of money for the club.

It is now hoped that such tournaments will become a regular fixture, helping to further improve the spirit and sense of unity within the club. They're also a great excuse to enjoy a fun social occasion!

Thanks go to Steve Hiles, Jeremy Smith, Steve Robbins and Paul Gerrish - members of the Youth Section Fundraising Committee - for their efforts in organising the event.
