Royals comeback quashes Under 18s' cup hopes

Sunday 22nd May 2016

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s' hopes of North Wilts League Cup success were dashed as Shrivenham Royal came from a goal down to win by the odd goal in three in the County Ground showpiece.

Jack Graham gave Bassett the lead at the home of Swindon Town. However, Shrivenham - the undefeated Division Two champions who had defeated Division One title winners Fairford Town Youth in the semi final - came back to crown themselves as cup kings.

While it may be seen as another blow for Bassett after they missed out on runners-up spot in Division One following defeat in their final league game of their season, the team should look back on their campaign as have been an extremely successful season one.

On top of making the North Wilts League Cup final, many of the players were part of the team who romped to success in the Wiltshire Floodlit League North Division, while a handful have also gained experience in senior Wiltshire League football with the reserves and Hellenic League Premier Division footbll with the first team.

The Under 15 Blues were also in action at the County Ground in a charity match against a Division One All Star team, which finished 1-1. The game was played in recognition of Bassett's significant act of sportsmanship in their semi final loss against Swindon Supermarine 'L'.

Elsewhere on Sunday, the Under 13 Yellows and Whites both saw their seasons end with defeats. A Tom Warren brace wasn't enough for the Yellows in their 6-3 loss against Malmesbury Youth Tornadoes, while the Whites were beaten 7-2 by Lydiard Youth Black.
