Under 18s gunning for cup glory

Tuesday 17th May 2016

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s face Shrivenham Royals in the North Wilts League Cup final at the County Ground this weekend (4pm kick off).

Bassett will be looking to overcome the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a top two spot in Division One by claiming glory in the League Cup.

Many of the players know what it takes to secure honours though, having featured in the Floodlit League side, which stormed to the North Division title.

While the they will face a Division Two side at the home of Swindon Town, Shrivenham nonetheless represent formidable opponents. The Royals finished their league campaign as unbeaten champions, dropping just two points in a draw against runners-up Wroughton along the way.

Their route to the cup final also saw them eliminate Division One winners Fairford Town Youth (3-1) in the semi-final. Prior to that, Shrivenham defeated Wroughton (2-1), Sevenfields United (12-0) and Hungerford Town Juniors (11-1).

Bassett's route to the final saw them record victories against Stratton Youth (4-1), Highworth Town Juniors 'H' (4-0) and Division Three champions Ramsbury Juniors (4-1).

For those wishing to attend, few spaces are still available on a coach which is being put on for players, family and supporters. This will depart the New Gerard Buxton Sports Ground at 2.30pm. Spaces are available for £10 and can be reserved by contacting manager Paul Gerrish directly by email or by mobile on 07946 629483.

The Under 15 Blues are also set to grace the County Ground turf on Sunday as they take on an Under 15 Division One All Star side (kick off 9.30am).

A reward for their sporting gesture in their cup semi-final defeat against Swindon Supermarine 'L', money raised on the gate for the 50 minute match will be donated to charity.

In their semi-final, Bassett agreed to play with just ten men, despite having a full squad of fourteen available, after their opponents turned up for the game one player short.

It would be great to see as many supporters as possible at both games to cheer on the Bassett boys, raise money for a good cause and help the Under 18s in their quest to lift the cup!
